Marijuana Effects On The Brain

Cannabis or better known as Marijuana or weed, wields various effects on the brain. The primary psychoactive compound known as THC or delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol interacts with specific receptors in the brain, which leads to alterations in cognitive and neurological functions. When marijuana is consumed the THC binds to cannabinoid receptors, primarily found in regions responsible for memory, learning, attention, coordination and pleasure. Subsequently, the use of marijuana can impact ones short-term memory, impair attention and concentration, slow reaction times, and have an affect on motor coordination. Heavy and prolonged marijuana use, particularly during adolescence, may also lead to long-term changes in brain structure and how the brain functions, which may also affect cognitive ability and mental health. Further research must be done in order to fully understand the complex relationship of marijuana and its effects on the brain.
