Does smoking marijuana increase lung cancer risk?

Marijuana use has become even more popular than it has been in past years. Many states have recently passed new laws legalizing recreational marijuana use. Research has shown that legalization increases marijuana use almost 20%. With marijuana becoming even more used by more people, we should learn more about how it can affect lung health. Marijuana use does not only pose a threat to lung health, it also poses a threat to heart health, and also mental health.

FACTS

Chemicals In Marijuana– Many people believe that smoking marijuana is safer than smoking cigarettes because cigarettes contain many toxins and cancer causing chemicals. Taking note that marijuana is not chemical free is very important. Marijuana contains a many cancerous chemicals including tar, ammonia, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, cyanide, benzene and many more.

Marijuana and lung cancer– Research has shown that smoking marijuana can increase the risk of lung disease and cancer, however more research needs to be done to find out how marijuana use can effect long-term health and risk of lung cancer.

Marijuana and lung irritants– Smoke and chemicals in marijuana can be damaging to the lungs. Smoking marijuana increases the risk of developing bronchospasm, which means a constriction or narrowing of airways. When this happens, breathing can become difficult, and cause coughing and shortness of breath.

Vaping marijuana– Many individuals prefer to vape marijuana thinking that it is a safer alternative to smoking, however research has shown that vaping marijuana can still cause harm to your health. In 2019 there was an outbreak of a new lung injury called e-cigarette or vaping product use associated lung injury (EVALI). The CDC cautioned people about using marijuana vape due to the EVALI outbreak in 2019. Mental and psychological issues are also at a higher risk when one vapes marijuana.

SUMMARY

Marijuana use has been associated with many health problems, and can increase the risk of cancer and lung disease. It’s important for people to be aware of how marijuana can negatively impact ones health, mentally and physically.
